Our firm & our history Over the past four years, our firm has expanded with Brookes LLP and AA Thornton IP, uniting roots that stretch back to the 1880s. The vast experience within our team provides a wide pool of specialist resource and our leading services go beyond protecting your intellectual property. Ultimately, our shared goal is the commercial success of your business. 2024 AA Thornton, a leading IP firm based in London joined us on 1 December 2024, expanding our physical reach to Oxford and Madrid. Our Cambridge team moved over to the Cambridge science park and our Manchester team moved to Oxford Street Manchester. 2020 We welcome Tunbridge Well’s firm Brookes IP to the Venner Shipley group, bringing their extensive knowledge and expertise to our team and adding our fifth office in the UK. 2015 We opened our fourth office in the UK in Manchester. 2014 We opened two new offices in Guildford and also our first office in the EU in Munich. 2011 Our London office in Little Britain moved to 200 Aldersgate. As with the rest of the world in the early ‘ten’s’, Venner Shipley launched an app, The IP Tool Kit! A one stop shop for data research around anything IP aimed at managers, IP professionals and inventors alike. App 2006 We opened our second office in Cambridge, which was featured in the local news. 2004 Venner Shipley became a UK limited liability partnership. 1997 We celebrated our Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of service with a grand celebration. An excerpt from one of our 1997 newsletters captures Alan Venner’s reflections on the festivities and raises a toast to the next 50 years. 1960's The 1960s proved to be a period of client development. For example, our founder, Harold Venner acted on behalf of Rael-Brook Ltd to patent the first drip-dry shirt. 1950s Harold Venner set about resurrecting pre-war clients and finding new ones. Early clients were ZF Friedrichshafen AG (the manufacturers of ZF gearboxes) and, when the German Democratic Republic was formed in 1949, VEB Carl Zeiss Jena, the East German part of the pre-war Carl Zeiss. 1947 Harold Venner purchased a patent attorney practice from the widow of Siegmund Sokal. Records suggest Sokal’s practice was founded as far back as 1923. 1911 Alfred Augustus Thornton founded AA Thornton back in 1911. Over 100 years later, they have joined forces with Venner Shipley to create a firm based on shared values focusing on great client service (see 2024). 1852 In the very same year that the UK Patent Office opened, William Brookes, a patent agent and consulting engineer, set up an independent practice on Chancery Lane, Brookes IP.
